A Guitar with Stories: The Ovation Elite Special S868 (2000-2001)
There are some guitars that seem to come alive not just because of the notes they play but because of the stories they carry. One such guitar is an Ovation Elite Special S868, a USA-made model from 2000-2001. It’s a guitar that’s been on a journey that started in Bangkok around 2004, then moved to the Isan area of Thailand, and in 2014, it crossed to the other side of the globe, to Finland—and it shows, in the best possible way. In this blog post, I want to share more about this unique instrument, the places it’s been, and what makes it truly special.

The Ovation Elite Special S868: A Unique Blend of Craftsmanship
The Ovation Elite Special S868 stands out for its craftsmanship, distinct design, and the unmistakable Ovation sound. Produced in 2000-2001, it features a solid spruce top paired with Ovation’s signature shallow Lyrachord bowl-shaped back, creating a bright, resonant tone that’s easily amplified. The guitar’s multiple small sound holes on the upper bout—instead of a traditional central sound hole—are a signature feature of the Elite series, designed to enhance resonance and reduce feedback when amplified. The satin finish further adds to its refined look.
Below, you can listen to a sound sample played on this exact guitar.

This guitar’s playability is another reason why it’s such a joy to perform with. The neck, made from mahogany, with a rosewood fingerboard, provides a smooth, comfortable feel, while the shallow body with a cutaway design makes it easier to play standing up during long performances. The built-in OP-30 preamp system allows for great versatility, making it ready for gigs right out of the case. With 14 frets to the body, it offers excellent range for both rhythm and lead playing.

A Journey Across Continents: From Bangkok to Isan and to Finland
This specific Ovation Elite Special S868 has lived a life beyond the typical living room or studio. It began its journey in Bangkok around 2004 and later moved to the Isan area of Thailand. It was performed mostly in restaurants, with performances every night. In 2014, it moved to the other side of the globe, to Finland, where it was mostly used in live streaming performances and YouTube videos. It’s been a faithful companion in a variety of settings—solo or with a band, restaurants and live streams, and everything in between. Each nick and scratch on its body is a testament to the stories and music it has shared over the years.

The Marks of a Well-Loved Guitar
Unlike some instruments that are prized for their pristine, untouched condition, this guitar’s cosmetic wear adds to its charm. The visible signs of use are not blemishes; they are badges of honor that show its history as a well-loved and often-played instrument. The scuffs and dings are reminders of countless hours of practice, travel, and performance. For me, they add character, giving the guitar a lived-in, comfortable feel that’s hard to replicate.

Last winter 2023, I had the guitar serviced at Pietarsaaren Musiikki, ensuring that it’s in top playing condition despite its road-worn appearance. The neck has been adjusted, the frets polished, and everything checked to make sure it’s ready for its next chapter.
Why This Guitar Still Shines
The sound of the Ovation Elite Special S868 is as rich and clear today as it was over two decades ago. The combination of the spruce top and the Lyrachord body provides a full, balanced tone that’s perfect for both strumming and fingerpicking. Whether amplified through the OP-30 preamp or played acoustically, the guitar delivers a warm, responsive sound that’s well-suited for a variety of musical genres.

This guitar is more than just an instrument; it’s a part of my musical journey. It’s for those who appreciate an instrument with a story to tell—one that has seen and experienced the joy of performing and the adventure of travel. If you’re a musician who values character and charisma in an instrument, this Ovation Elite Special S868 might just be the perfect fit for you.
